Seeing Red (Rock Canyon)

The last time we mentioned the color red was with the Valley of Fire. Continuing in that vein we thought we’d talk about another great natural feature to explore while you’re staying at the Las Vegas RV Resort, Red Rock Canyon. Red Rock is a phenomenal place to visit that offers a variety of activities combined with superb landscapes.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

You’ll find the Red Rock Canyon area about 15 miles away from our resort. It can even be seen from the Strip. This area gets its name from a set of large red rock formations, the Keystone Thrust and the walls go up to 3,000 feet.

Inhabited by Native American tribes in previous millennia, during the 20th century it was home to a sandstone quarry operated by the Excelsior Company. If you’re a fan of westerns, you may have seen Red Rock in “Bells of San Angelo” with Roy Rogers or in “The Stalking Moon” with Gregory Peck.

Things to do

If you love a challenge you can tackle climbing the walls, as rock climbing is a popular sport and Red Rock Canyon has a number of climbing areas. If that is a little more than you’re interested in, take a hike on one of the nearly two dozen trails, ranging from difficult to easy.

Some of the trails offer the option of riding a horse or a bike instead of walking. Whatever you choose to do, be sure to bring plenty of water because temperatures routinely exceed 105° Fahrenheit in the summer months. If you choose to hike off the established trails, don’t go alone and risk a rattlesnake or flash flooding encounter.
